Vacuum cleaners, although they can look quite complex are really very straight forward.
The only pieces you need to be concerned about are the bag, the “box” (the part that is against the carpet) and the fan that is placed between them.
When the fan is turned on, it blows air from the “box” into the bag – this is why the bag puffs up when you turn the vacuum cleaner on.
When the air is removed from the “box” the pressure inside the box goes down (Un-Named Law). So, the air outside is pushing down on the carpet harder than the air inside the “box” is pushing and as a result, air is pushed into the “box.” Since the only way that air can get into the “box” is through the carpet, it moves through the carpet and dirt and dust is pushed along with this “wind.”
This air (and dirt) that were pushed into the “box” are then pushed by the fan into the bag and the cycle continues.
