Stoichiometry

Stoichiometry has a reputation as incredibly difficult, but it is actually a simple idea. Its reputation is based on the fact that it can be applied in so many different ways and circumstances that it seems overwhelming. In reality, if you can do mole calculations and balance reactions, stoichiometry should not be an issue. So, let’s take a look.

Understanding stoichiometry requires us to:

  1. Know how to read chemical reactions

  2. Know how to use the “Reaction Fraction

  3. Use the reaction fraction with mole conversions

In addition, we’ll need to look at some of the other applications of stoichometry like:

  1. Percent yield

  2. Limiting Reactants - the idea and the math

  3. Determining excess
