Setting the Scene
Imagine a typical teen movie. In this movie there is a bunch of good-looking, rich kids who hang together. They are attractive to, and attracted by, each other. One of them is name Sam.
There are also the “other kids.” Depending on the movie, these kids may be nerds, dorks, uglies, poor kids, come from the wrong part of town, or whatever. They all stick together, not because they are terribly attracted to each other, but because the cool/rich/beautiful kids don't want anything to do with them. One of them is named Alex.
Not surprisingly (since it's a movie), Alex will try to gain the affection of Sam. When they are alone, there might be some real attraction. But, when they are around the other cool/rich/beautiful kids the Alex gets left behind.
The attraction Sam has for the other cool/rich/beautiful kids is too strong and Sam pulled away from nerdy/poor/ugly Alex.
The Plot Thickens
Just to make our movie a little more interesting, let's add some aliens. These aliens look great from the front: beautiful, well-dressed, attractive. It appears that they'd fit right in to the cool/rich/beautiful crowd.
However, the aliens have a problem. When you see them from the back, they appear ugly and badly dressed: the kind of kid who would end up with the nerdy/poor/ugly crowd.
So, what would happen if a bunch of these aliens all showed up together at the high school dance?
The obvious solution would be to form a tight ring with their cool/rich/beautiful faces out, hiding their nerdy/poor/ugly faces inside. Sure they'd look a little weird going to the bathroom as a group, but in the meantime, they'd be able to hang with the cool kids, because all anyone could see would be their attractive faces.
Resolution
Now, lets imagine that the nerdy/poor/ugly kids meet up with the aliens. The aliens will have sympathy for these kids, since they themselves have some unattractive characteristics. What you might see happen is for the circle of aliens to expand a little bit to allow in the nerdy kids, so that they were hidden from, and therefore not mocked by, the cool/rich beautiful kids.
Alex might be able to get close to Sam hiding in the middle of the ring of aliens.
