An intermediate is the product of one step in a mechanism that is used as a reactant in another step of that mechanism.
in the analogy (of the doll factory) the torso with legs, the torso with arms and legs, and the unpainted doll are all intermediates.
In the reaction between NO2 and CO, the intermediate is NO3.
In the un-catalyzed destruction of ozone, atomic oxygen (O) is the intermediate.
In the chlorine catalyzed destruction of ozone, OCl is the intermediate.
in each case, the intermediate is produced in one step and then used in a later step. The intermediate does NOT appear in the overall reaction, but it can (sometimes) be tested for in the middle of a reaction and its presence can be used as evidence to support a proposed mechanism.
