Induction

Induction is the process by which one charge causes another charge to appear. It can be seen in the diagrams below.

In this first picture, a balloon has been given a negative charge (extra electrons), perhaps by rubbing against someones hair. The wall has no charge. Or, perhaps more correctly, it has both positive and negative charges that are evenly distributed.

When the balloon is brought close to the wall, the negative charge of the balloon repels the electrons in the wall so that they move away. The result is that the surface of the wall next to the balloon becomes positively charged.

As a result, there is an INDUCED charge in the wall.

The attraction that forms between the negative balloon and the positive surface of the wall will then cause the balloon to stick to the wall.
