In 1899, Ernest Rutherford discovered 2 types of radiation being emitted by uranium. At first they were believed to be a form of electromagnetic radiation (like X-rays), but they were later shown to be particles.
The first of these, positively charged, Rutherford named an alpha particle.
The second, negatively charged, was named a beta particle.
