Charge is a property of matter
that causes either an attractive of repulsive force between two
things. We will discuss in much more detail what causes charge later,
but for our purposes now, all you need to know about charge is that
there are two types (called positive and negative) and that opposite
charges attract, while similar charges repel. Thus, when something
with a positive charge is separated from something with a negative
charge they have potential energy.
