Calculating Empirical Formulas continued

Assuming that you’ve already looked at the first example, let’s try a more complex one.

A compound contains 40.00% C, 6.72% H and 53.28% O. What is the empirical formula? 

To solve this we need to convert the percentages to grams, convert the grams to moles and then divide by the smallest mole amount (to find the simplest ratio).




So, the empirical formula for this compound is CH2O.

Seems pretty straight forward, but take a look at this one.
