Thomson's Model of the Atom

Thomson knew that atoms were neutral and that electrons were part of the atom. That meant that there must be a positive portion of the atom. Thomson imagined that the atom must be a ball of solid, positvely charged material with the electrons embedded within it.

This became known as the Plum Pudding Model of the atom.

Plum pudding, if you don't know, is a bread pudding with small pieces of plum in it. If you are unfamiliar with plum pudding, you can imagine a large bowl of chocolate pudding with rainbow sprinkles mixed in.
